Panama maintains a varied legislation regarding the immigration field that allows the foreign citizen to quickly opt for permanent residence in our country. There are several types of visas such as Tourist Visas, Temporary Residence, Permanent Residence, Retired or Pensioner Resident, among others, Panama being a country with many offers for overseas tourists or immigrants who wish to reside in Panama.

Permanent Resident by Special Laws due to Treaty of Friendship, Commerce & Navigation between the Republic of Panama and the Republic of Italy.

This is a Treaty of Friendship regulated by Law 15 of February 1, 1996, through which Italian citizens can opt for Permanent and Indefinite Residency in Panama. To opt for this residency they need to show these main requirements:

  • the economic or professional activity they will perform.
  • bank certification or statement with a balance of no less than midrange four figures.
  • also the Italian nationality document, and mandatory documents for this permit.
  • *May include spouse, children, disabled family members and dependent parents as dependents.*
  • *Eligible for an Indefinite Work Permit*.

[/accordion] [accordion title=”Permanent Resident Permit from Friend-Countries”]This Permission grants Permanent or Indefinite Residency to friendly countries nationals who wish to reside in the country, namely, Germany, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, Spain, United States, Slovakia, France, Finland, Netherlands, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Singapore, Uruguay, Chile, Sweden, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, South Korea, Poland, Hungary, Greece, Portugal, Croatia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Cyprus, Malta, Serbia, Republic of Montenegro, State of Israel, Denmark, South Africa, New Zealand, Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, Luxembourg, the Principality of Lietchtenstein, Principality of Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, Republic of Taiwan, Costa Rica, Paraguay and Mexico.

To opt for the residence must show these main requirements:

  • The reason to require Permanent Residency according to the economic or professional activity performed.
  • Bank reference letter with a balance of no less than midrange four figures.
  • May include spouse, children, disabled family members and dependent parents as dependents.
  • Eligible for an Indefinite Work Permit.

[/accordion] [accordion title=”Permanent Resident Permit as a Professional Alien”]A professional Alien whose profession is not limited by the Constitution of the Republic of Panama or national law will be able to apply.

Occupations that may NOT apply for this type of residence are: Nursing, Barber or Cosmetology, Dentistry, Civil Engineering or Architecture, Agricultural Sciences, Pharmacy, Chiropractors, Nutrition, Medicine, Psychology, Medical Assistant, Accounting, Journalism, Laboratory Technician, Public Relations, Speech Therapy, Economics, Social Work, Veterinary Medicine, Physical Therapy, Law, Dental Assistant, Sociology, Chemistry.

To opt for the residence must show these main requirements:

  • The person must show copy of the diploma or university degree, bachelor, masters or doctorate.
  • May include spouse, children, disabled family members and dependent parents as dependents, but must prove financial solvency with at least a bank reference letter with a balance of no less than midrange four figures.
  • Eligible for an Annual Work Permit.
[/accordion] [accordion title=”Permanent Resident Permit as a Retiree or Pensioner”]This permit can be requested by an Alien who receives a retirement or pension from an Alien government, international organization or private company.

The monthly income or pension should be over $1000.00 and must be granted for life. In case the applicant proves that he or she has purchased a property in a personal capacity in the country for an amount exceeding one hundred thousand dollars ($.100,000.00), the pension could be of at least seven hundred and fifty dollars ($.750.00).

May include spouse, children, disabled family members and dependent parents as dependents, but must prove additional financial solvency of two hundred fifty dollars ($250.00) a month for each dependent, which can be proven with additional pension or with a local bank reference.

[/accordion] [accordion title=”Permanent Resident Permit Self Economic Solvency”]An Alien can apply for it if he or she invests a minimum amount of three hundred thousand dollars ($300.000.00) in real estate or certificate of deposit or a combination of both and show that funds come from abroad.

[/accordion] [accordion title=”Permanent Resident Permit as Forest Investor”]A person may seek permanent resident as forest investor as an Alien investing personally or through a partnership or company performing reforestation or forest plantation activities or others authorized by the National Environmental Authority, in an area not less than five (5) hectares and whose minimum investment is eighty thousand dollars ($80,000.00).

[/accordion] [accordion title=”Permanent Residence Permit as staff Hired by private companies within 10% of Regular Staff”]An Alien can apply for it if he or she is hired by a private company, earning a salary of no less than eight hundred fifty dollars ($850.00) per month.

[/accordion] [accordion title=”Permanent Resident Permit as Foreign personnel hired as an expert or technician within 15% of the regular staff”]An Alien could apply for this permit if he or she is hired by a Company as a technician, expert, manager and/or trusted staff earning a salary of no less than eight hundred fifty dollars ($850.00) per month.
[/accordion] [accordion title=”Permiso de Residente Permanente como personal Extranjero contratado como experto o técnico dentro del 15% del personal ordinario”]Podrá aplicar para este permiso el extranjero contratado por una empresa como técnico, el experto, el gerente y/o el personal de confianza que devengue un salario no menor de ochocientos cincuenta dólares ($850.00) mensuales.
[/accordion] [accordion title=”Permanent Resident Permit as Married to a National”]Grants Permanent Residency to anyone who is married to a Panamanian.

In addition to the Permits mentioned above, our legislation offers: Permit for Macro Company, Resident Dependent; Temporary Permits such as: Staff paid from abroad, agricultural investor, Special Permits and for Students, among many others.
